چکیده

In the Southern Hemisphere, humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) were heavily exploited from both coastal stations and in pelagic waters all major ocean basins. About 200,000 taken after 1900, causing declines of populations to small percentages their pre-exploitation levels. The study presented here aimed investigate whale abundance Brazilian breeding ground, order provide information support further analysis population recovery. Between 25 August 2 September 2001, a fixed wing, flat window, aircraft was used survey transect lines along northern limit Bahia State (12°10’S), southern Espírito Santo (20°42’S). All on-effort sightings recorded estimated according standard distance sampling methodology (Burnham et al., 1980; Buckland 1993). Group sizes ranged between 1-5 mean group size 1.52 (±0.06). model that best fitted perpendicular data, based on minimum Akaike Information Criterion, hazard rate model. using uncorrected data 1,493 (CV=0.21) whales. Surface time correct estimates for gˆ(0), resulting correction factor 0.67 (±0.15). corrected each block combined result, increased estimate 2,229 (CV=0.31) individuals. this could be identify new areas appropriate whalewatching, monitor status dynamics off coast establishment protected areas.

Influence of environmental parameters on movements and habitat utilization of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in the Madagascar breeding ground

Assessing the movement patterns and key habitat features of breeding humpback whales is a prerequisite for the conservation management of this philopatric species. To investigate the interactions between humpback whale movements and environmental conditions off Madagascar, we deployed 25 satellite tags in the northeast and southwest coast of Madagascar. For each recorded position, we collated e...

HUMPBACK WHALE ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) : North Atlantic Stock

These six regions represent relatively discrete subpopulations, fidelity to which is determined matrilineally (Clapham and Mayo 1987). Recent genetic analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has indicated that this fidelity has persisted over an evolutionary timescale in at least the Icelandic and Norwegian feeding grounds (Palsbøll et al. 1995, Larsen et al. 1996). Genetic partitioning is not evi...

Global diversity and oceanic divergence of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) annually undertake the longest migrations between seasonal feeding and breeding grounds of any mammal. Despite this dispersal potential, discontinuous seasonal distributions and migratory patterns suggest that humpbacks form discrete regional populations within each ocean. To better understand the worldwide population history of humpbacks, and the interp...

Deaths and Entanglements of Humpback Whales, Megaptera novaeangliae,

Reports of humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae, that either died or were entangled in Hawaiian waters from 1972 through October 1996 were analyzed to determine age class (estimated from body length and/or notes), location, annual frequency, and seasonal distribution of occurrence. Using reports collected from the National Marine Fisheries Service Pacific Area Office and published news repor...

Segregation of migration by feeding ground origin in North Atlantic humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae)

Results from a large-scale, capture–recapture study of humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae in the North Atlantic show that migration timing is influenced by feeding ground origin. No significant differences were observed in the number of individuals from any feeding area that were re-sighted in the common breeding area in the West Indies. However, there was a relationship between the proport...
